Home is more than a building.
It is where you sleep.
Where your children know where their things are.
Where you make dinner, wash clothes, laugh, argue, rest and live ordinary life.
So when you are frightened that you may lose your home, the fear can reach much deeper than money.
Perhaps you have fallen behind with your rent or mortgage.
Perhaps your income has changed.
Maybe you have received a letter that frightened you, or you simply know that another payment is coming and you don’t know how you will manage it.
You may even be looking around your home and wondering:
What happens if we can’t stay here?
If you are carrying that fear today, come and pray with me.
When Your Home No Longer Feels Secure
Financial fear can make it difficult to enjoy the home you are trying so hard to keep.
Tonight, don’t try to solve everything in your head.
Take a slow breath.
You are here now.
Let’s bring what is happening to God.
Let Us Pray
Dear God,
I am frightened about my home.
This is where I live.
This is where I close the door at night.
This is where so much of my life has happened.
And right now, I am scared that I might lose it.
God, You know my financial situation.
You know what I owe.
You know what is due.
You know what money I have and what I don’t have.
You know about every letter I have opened with shaking hands.
You know about every payment I have worried about.
And You know the thoughts I haven’t shared with anyone.
Where will we go?
What will I tell my children?
How am I going to fix this?
God, please help me.
Give me courage to face what is happening rather than hiding from it.
If there are telephone calls I need to make, help me make them.
If there are letters I need to answer, give me the courage to open them.
If there is support available to me, guide me towards it.
Put trustworthy people in my path who can help me understand my options.
Please give me wisdom before I make decisions out of fear.
Help me slow down.
Help me ask questions.
Help me understand what I am agreeing to before I agree to anything.
God, I pray for my family.
Protect them from carrying fears that they are too young or too vulnerable to carry.
Help me reassure them without making promises that I cannot guarantee.
Let them know that whatever happens, they are loved.
And God, remind me of that too.
My home matters to me.
But my worth is not measured by an address.
If this situation changes, I will still be me.
I will still love my family.
I will still get up tomorrow and take the next step.
But God, while there are still things I can do, give me the courage to do them.
Help me fight for stability with wisdom, not panic.
Open the right doors.
Guide me towards the right help.
And please make a way through what currently feels impossible.
Tonight, I place this home in Your hands.
I place the fear in Your hands.
I place tomorrow in Your hands.
Give me enough strength for the next telephone call.
The next appointment.
The next letter.
The next decision.
I don’t need to solve my whole future tonight.
I only need to take the next step.
Please walk with me while I take it.
So it is.
Don’t Ignore Letters Because You Are Frightened
If you are worried about losing your home, prayer can provide comfort, but this is also a situation where getting practical help early can matter.
Try not to ignore letters, emails or calls about rent or mortgage arrears because you are frightened.
Contact your landlord, mortgage provider or an appropriate free housing or debt-advice service and explain what is happening. Ask what options are available before assuming that losing your home is inevitable.
If you have received formal legal papers or a notice concerning your home, seek appropriate advice promptly.
A Short Prayer When Fear Returns
When you look around your home and the fear comes back, you can simply pray:
“God, protect my family, give me wisdom and show me the next step.”
